Before I jump into the Instant Pot talk, I’ll start with my mom , who used to have a really old pressure cooker. It would spew steam and juice everywhere and generally sound like it was about to explode at any minute. But you know what? My mom and that ancient pot made amazing beef stew and tenderized meat. So, when the instant pot started getting popular I really didn’t pay much attention. But now the instant pot is everywhere. People are singing from the rooftops about how their life has been changed and of course, I was over here totally skeptical. Could a pressure cooker really cook GOOD tasting meals in a fraction of the time a regular pressure cooker, slow cooker or even pot on the stove can?
I’ve had the Instant Pot for about three weeks now. I’m not much of a cooker but every once in awhile my family needs to eat. We’ve made several meals in the pot and have washed it weekly. So far, I’m impressed.
What You Need to Know About the Instant Pot
1. The saute feature is really helpful. I made pulled BBQ chicken and the recipe called for the chicken to be seared in the pot first. Admittedly I didn’t think the pot would get hot enough quickly enough. It took about 5 minutes for my oil to heat up and for chicken to be sizzling nicely in the pot. No need for an additional pot to brown the meat.
2. It still takes food time to cook, but for example, steel cut oats in 6 minutes was life changing. We dumped in oats, water, cinnamon, pressed the manual button and within 6 minutes the oats were ready for release and consumption. Next up I’m going to add in an apple compote just to see what the texture is like when mixing in additional flavorings. Our BBQ chicken dish took 25 minutes but that didn’t include the time it took to saute or shred.
3. An initial glance at prices on Amazon show the pot I’m using to be $89 however I purchased it for $69. Patience will land you a great deal on this item!
4. The vent is loose and flimsy but, it is designed that way. I fiddled with it for at least 10 minutes before just putting it in the correct position and then walking away 🙂
5. It ANOTHER item on my countertop that doesn’t really go with my simple and clean kitchen design. This annoys me, but it is compact enough that I was able to store it away when not in use.
