It’s less than a month until the movie Black Panther is released! Black Panther was the first black superhero, introduced by Marvel comics in 1966. T’challa is the protagonist of the Black Panther, the king of a fictional African nation of Wakanda. The premise of the film is that the Black Panther teams up with a CIA agent to prevent a world war.
Here’s the trailer, do yourself a favor and go watch!
What’s immediately clear is that the women in this film are warriors, they fight alongside their male counterparts and aren’t just on the sidelines. The film will introduce newbies to the Dora Milaje, elite fighters and personal guards of the Black Panther and the royal family. I’ve literally never seen anything like this before. The Dora Milaje are beautiful, powerful and my daughter is so excited to “see them fight as one.” Here are three fierce female Black Panther characters to look forward to!
Shuri is played by actress Leticia Wright. Shuri is T-Challa’s sister and the designer of his suit. I love that there will be a female character with technological expertise and her goal is to create tools to help protect her family.
Okoye is played by Danai Gurira and a fierce fighter of the Dora Milaje. She represents the traditional way of the Dora Milage while her comrade Nakia looks toward the future.
Nakia is played by Lupita N’yongo and is the eyes and ears of the Wakanda. She goes out into the world to see what is happening and reports back to Black Panther.
We are a family that loves superhero movies but I have to admit, we are so excited for this one because it looks so different than anything we’ve seen before. There can never be enough strong female characters for young fans such as my daughter. She was so excited to see the Black Panther signage so I snapped a picture of her!
