I realized that I haven’t done a bookish post in a while and with all my travelling for work I have caught up on lots of reading! My recent reads have been all over the place but hands down the best one I’ve read in the last month is The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve. Set in Maine in the 1940’s, The Stars Are Fire details the life of a young mother whose husband goes missing in a firestorm that overtakes the coast. It’s such a beautifully written book, and it’s very suspenseful but not in a scary way. The buildup is quiet but towards the end of the book, I couldn’t do anything until I had finished the story. For me, that is the sign of an amazing book!
Last week I finished The Goddesses and Girl in the Blue Coat. The Goddesses is about a family who attempts to make a fresh start by moving to Hawaii from California. The main character has lost trust in her husband and they try to get back to the days where they were happy and in love until a mysterious woman comes into their life. It’s not as suspenseful as the previous book but I enjoyed its authentic look at mainlanders who move to Hawaii.
Girl in the Blue Coat was such a pleasant surprise mostly because it wasn’t on my radar at all! This is a YA novel set in WWII and follows a girl who finds herself in the Dutch Resistance. What starts off as a girl just trying to cope with the loss of her boyfriend turns into a novel about personal responsibility and the heeding that urge to do what is right rather than what is popular. For those that love historical fiction novels, this is a must-read.
