When I woke up one morning with a rash on my face, I had no idea what a journey shingles would be. Shingles are caused by the reactivation of the Herpes Zoster virus that remains dormant in the body after the recovery of chickenpox. The virus is suddenly reactivated by the combination of stress and a compromised immune system. A well-balanced diet can help boost the immune system and support the healing process when you are suffering from shingles. Here are 10 foods to avoid when you have the shingles virus!
As always please check with your doctor if you think you have shingles.
Foods to avoid if you have the Shingles Virus!
Soda is very high in sugar! Think of your food consumption as a shingles diet. Limit any soda intake and drink water to stay hydrated. Shingles will exhaust your mind and body, and cause mood swings, and sugar addiction. Make sure you are upping your water intake with a water bottle that tracks what you drink!
Nuts contain arginine which is an amino acid that feeds the shingles virus and helps the virus replicate. Avoid nuts like almonds, and cashews, and make sure to take L-Lysine supplements to combat the effects of the arginine.
Consuming lots of alcohol can cause cirrhosis of the liver, impair memory skills and reduce fertility. Bottom line? Just avoid it in general and especially if you want to establish a healthy shingles diet.
4. Canned Tuna
A major food to avoid when you have shingles is canned tuna. It’s another common food that is high in arginine!
5. Dark Chocolate
The worst culprit that contains the amino acid arginine that can stimulate the herpes zoster virus to replicate is chocolate, especially the dark kind. Avoid chocolate and make sure to include Lysine supplements in your diet.
6. Refined Carbs
Avoid foods that are refined carbohydrates. Here are a few examples of refined carbs:
- Sugary Cereals
- White Bread
7. Avoid Gelatin if You Have Shingles Virus
Gelatin contains arginine and doesn’t have much nutritional value. Avoid it during your shingles outbreak! Again, arginine feeds the shingles virus and you can combat this by taking Lysine supplements to help get your system balanced.
8. Is Coffee OK to Drink with Shingles?
I know I know, some of us are coffee addicts! Avoid stimulants which can exacerbate stress while having shingles. One common symptom in shingles sufferers is that they have high-stress levels. Avoid coffee and make sure you are doing self-care to allow your mind and body to relax!
If you need a hot drink in the mornings, consider herbal tea or warm water with lemon.
9. Processed foods
Processed foods should be avoided and cut out of your shingles diet! Types of processed foods are as follows:
- Frozen dinners
- Fruit Snacks
- Microwave popcorn
- Canned vegetables and fruit
Try to limit your consumption of soy products while you are suffering from shingles.
SO WHAT CAN I EAT?
The best way to survive shingles is to stick with fresh vegetables and protein. Eating lots of leafy tomatoes, orange and yellow fruits, whole grains, beans, and legumes can promote healing.
Drink water and non-caffeinated tea.
Can I eat tomatoes?
Avoid tomatoes because they are high in arginine which feeds the shingles virus.
Can I eat yogurt?
Yogurt has probiotics and lysine which can help your body heal from shingles.
Shingles are terrible! How can I keep my spirits up?
To keep your spirits up while you’re recovering from shingles, it’s so important to maintain a positive attitude and stay connected with friends and family. Try to get plenty of rest and hydration. My advice is to focus on activities that bring you joy, like reading, listening to music, watching movies, or engaging in your favorite hobbies. Additionally, it can be helpful to talk to a therapist or join a support group if you feel that you need additional emotional support. Just remember, it’s temporary!
Make sure you take all your medications and supplements including Lysine to block the amino acids that feed the shingles virus!
