Miles Morales Shock Waves Review

We don’t talk enough about just how good “Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse” was. It introduced an Afro-Carribean Gen Z’er who was busy trying to balance school and being a superhero. Thankfully, no much has changed in Miles Morales: Shock Waves and we get to check in on Miles who is flying around Brooklyn still fighting crime.

Miles Morales: Shock Waves picks up with Miles struggling to balance his secret life as a superhero and as a student at Brooklyn Visions Academy. A massive earthquake hits Puerto Rico, affecting Myles’ mother’s homeland and Miles is determined to host a fundraiser to raise money for the island. Miles meets a new student Kyle whose father goes missing, just as Spiderman gets mixed up with two female bandits. Miles and Kyle eventually team up to track down her father leading them directly into the path of a villain who seems to be creating super soldiers in his lab.

Miles Morales: Shock Waves sticks close to the aspects of Miles that I loved in the film, his desire to be a successful superhero, his love for his family and his ambition to finish school. Always looming overhead is Miles’ struggle to balance everything, and often times the people around Miles just think he is distracted but in reality he’s exhausted by his crime fighting during the night. The banter between between Miles and his friends especially Ganke Lee is silly and I appreciated the few fun cameo’s that I won’t spoil.

Shock Waves carries forward a really important aspect of New York and Miles’ world: diversity. I personally like seeing Brown characters and feel like this was a good snapshot of just how diverse Brooklyn is. Vibrant colors, a fast paced plot and familiar characters make this a must read graphic novel for Marvel fans of all ages!

Miles Morales: Shock Waves releases in June 2021!
