Big News! The live-action adaptation of Mulan is set to launch on Disney+ on September 3 2020! You can view for $29 if you have a Disney+ subscription. For non-subscribers, a Disney Plus subscription purchase ($6.99 per month) is needed in addition to $29.99 fee for the film itself. Covid has made us all adjust our viewing habits so I’ve put together a few ideas on how to prep for a Mulan movie night!
Mulan follows a young woman in China who poses as a man in order to take her father’s place in the war against the Huns. It’s based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. The live-action movie starring Yifei Liu, Jason Scott Lee and Donnie Yen will follow the same story, and will be rated PG-13.

Watch the original Movie and Sequel
Mulan and it’s sequel Mulan II are favorites in our home and you can access them through your Disney+ subscription. The girls know all the songs by heart so we will watch both before the movie to prepare!
Listen to the music!
The song, “Loyal Brave True” was recently released and the music video was directed by Mulan feature director Niki Caro. Disney also announced, in addition to “Loyal Brave True,” Aguilera also performs a newly-recorded “Reflection (2020).
Read the Books to get ready
I’ve shared several Mulan books that are based off the new adaptation movie! Our favorite is this picture book, A Place for Mulan which has beautiful illustrations and reminds readers to embrace the things that make them different from other people. Read them together as a family to prep for your Mulan movie night!
Special Food or Treats
Mulan takes place in China so we are planning a fun dinner inspired by Chinese cuisine. Think easy but tasty foods that your kids can help prepare like egg rolls or fried rice. I also picked up some fun lychee hard candies for the girls to try with their movie popcorn!
