Review: Great Big Family Playday at The San Jose CDM
This post is sponsored by SocalMoms and Great Big Fun Family Play Day. All thoughts and opinions my own.
What Is Great Big family play day?
Touted as “Coachella for Kids” Great Big Fun Family Play Day is an event for kids that features bands, product samples, exhibits, and food trucks. The concentration is on kids aged 3-7 but my 9-year-old had a great time exploring exhibits and listening to bands like Andy Z and the Beat Buds.
Where is the great big family play day hosted at?
The San Jose Children’s Discovery is the host location to Great Big Family Play Day and one of the largest museums of its kind in the nation, featuring 150 interactive exhibits that let its young visitors explore, understand and enjoy the world. Known as the Big Purple Building, the museum is located in downtown San Jose, right next to a light rail stop making it convents to get to through public transportation.
The Children’s Discovery Museum hosted the exhibits some of which featured bees in the process of creating honeycombs, water features, the coolest air maze, and an outdoor area that has small play structures. The CDM has several full-sized vehicles inside for kids to climb into. My daughter liked sitting in the ambulance and fire truck as well as playing with all the switches and wheels. Each vehicle does get a little crowded so you may have to wait in line to access it.
While the entrance of the museum was crowded, we found lots of quiet areas and exhibits that we could explore without feeling like we were on top of other people. We wore masks and found there to be plenty of hand sanitizing stations all over which is important due to all the little hands touching the exhibits.
The dance area was fun with bands rotating in and out and plenty of space for kids to dance and jump around. The event also had fun step and repeats throughout the museum which was great to take photos at to commemorate the day.
For us, this event was a great way to spend a weekend morning and grab lunch at the food trucks parked outside. Both interactive and educational, Great Big Family Play Day events are worth the trip!
