Kō Hana Distillers Tour Review
If you’re looking for something beyond the beaches and resorts on Oahu, consider taking a tour at Kō Hana Distillers. Tucked away along Kunia Road between Kunia and Wahiawā, this working distillery is truly off the beaten path. Surrounded by fields and far from the crowds of Waikīkī, it’s a fun way to learn about Hawaiian agriculture while tasting some excellent locally made rum.

The Kō Hana Distillers is located at 92-1770 Kunia Rd #227, Kunia Camp, HI 96759. There’s plenty of free parking, and visitors are encouraged to wander through the showroom before the tour begins. It’s worth taking your time because there are plenty of Kō Hana products and souvenirs to browse.
Some of my favorite items were the beautifully painted rum bottles that would make unique home décor, and if you’re looking for a personalized souvenir, you can even have your name engraved on a bottle of Kō Hana Distillers rum. The showroom also carries locally made products, sauces, chocolates, and other gifts that are easy to pack in your suitcase.
The Kō Hana Distillers property itself is beautiful. Outside, there was a small garden of several varieties of Hawaiian sugar cane, giving visitors a chance to see the different types used to make Kō Hana’s agricole-style rum. Nearby, you can also see the barrel storage area before heading inside the aging room. Our guide pointed out several rare koa wood barrels alongside the traditional barrels, explaining why koa is such a prized Hawaiian hardwood.
Another unexpected highlight was the resident tortoise, who spends much of the day relaxing in the sunshine near the edge of the property. He’s become something of the Kō Hana Distillers mascot and was adopted by the distillery from an older couple on the island.
Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and kept the tour entertaining with plenty of stories and humor. We even started by tasting fresh sugar cane juice, which was surprisingly sweet (and tasted almost like apple juice) and unlike anything I’d ever tried before. The tour itself isn’t very long since the distillery is fairly compact, making it easy to fit into a day of exploring Oahu.
At the end of the tour, everyone enjoys a guided Kō Hana Distillers rum tasting. You can choose from several tasting options, and we sampled a variety of their award-winning cocktails. The tasting was relaxed and informative, and I appreciated that water was served in traditional-style ship drinking cups, a fun detail that tied into the history of rum.
We also sampled Kō Hana’s collaboration chocolate with Mānoa Chocolate, along with their house hot sauce and rum cake. The chocolate was rich and delicious, while the hot sauce was definitely spicy, so consider yourself warned! I’d also recommend eating beforehand if you’re a lightweight when it comes to rum tastings.
Although there’s an on-site restaurant that’s popular with both visitors and locals, the barbecue restaurant was closed during our visit, so we weren’t able to try it ourselves. Several people told us it’s worth coming back for the food alone, and we noticed guests stopping by just to eat or shop without taking the tour, so it’s clearly a destination in its own right.
One final detail I found interesting is that the showroom is housed inside a historic Quonset hut—a corrugated metal military building dating back to World War II that has been preserved as part of Hawaii’s history. It gives the distillery a unique character and serves as a reminder of the property’s past.
Overall, Kō Hana Distillers was one of the most enjoyable experiences we had on Oahu. Between the beautiful grounds, fascinating look at Hawaiian sugar cane, friendly staff, excellent rum, and unique souvenirs, it’s well worth venturing off the beaten path.
