DIY: Kids Wood Clothing Rack

Kiki’s room has been a work in progress in this new house.  I’m obsessed with dress-up clothing for her and needed some storage ideas since her closet is tiny. While browsing Pinterest, I saw a few examples of a kids clothing rack and asked my husband to put one together for me.  Luckily he was in the mood for some cutting and drilling, and after doing a rough sketch, was able to build a kids wood clothing rack from scratch!

How to DIY a KIDS CLOTHING RACK

I showed my husband a few pictures of what I wanted and he dug around in the garage.  A quick trip to the hardware store was made to purchase a dowel, however, we had a ton of scrap pieces from the farmhouse table we built to utilize for the rest of the clothing rack.

My husband was able to piece it together using those scrap pieces but I’ve included a full shopping list if you are starting from the kids clothing rack from scratch.

Materials List for a DIY KIDS Clothing Rack:

4 –  1in x 2in x 72in Pine Boards

1 –  1in x 12in x 48in or 72in Common Board

1 – 1in x 10in x 48in or 72in Pine Board

1 – 3/4in by 48in wood dowel rod

Directions FOR THE DIY KIDS CLOTHING RACK:

Make 4 cuts of the 1×2 boards at 52 inches

With the scrap pieces create 2 pieces at 10 inches and 2 pieces at 12 inches

Cut the 1×10, the 1×12, and the dowel rod at 28.5 inches

Use 1 1/4 inch wood screws to attach pieces.  We did a teepee-style rack.

Right now I’m using the clothing rack to store Kiki’s dresses and shoes but A has asked for one in her room so we are working on a second kid’s wood clothing rack.  Kiki loves arranging her dresses and we have kid’s wood clothing rack that was an easy project to put together!

      1. Thanks, I wasn’t sure if there was an additional link with printables.

  4. How did you attach the rod ?

    1. Screwed directly into the cross pieces!

  5. Hi there so should I just screw the round with the 2 square or did you make a hole first? I love it!!!

    1. In order for the wood not to split we drilled a pilot hole.

  6. What would you say the cost was for materials?

    1. Hi! It was around $50!

  7. Don Nutting says:

Purchased the material – how many inches between the shelves? Just a ruff number

    1. Hi! 4-5 inches, enough to slide shoes in and out.

  8. Did you use a longer wood screw to attach the dowel to the 52″ pieces? 1.25″ screws seem too short to go through two 1″ pieces and a dowel. Maybe I’m missing something? I’d appreciate the clarification!

    1. Hi! Just double-checked and my husband confirmed he used 1 1/4 inch screws.
